Biography

Brandy Rayana Norwood was born on February 11, 1979, in McComb, Mississippi, and raised in Carson, California. Surrounded by music from an early age, she sang in church and developed ambitions inspired by accomplished vocal performers. After working as a backing vocalist and signing with Atlantic Records, she released her self-titled debut album in 1994. Its memorable singles included “I Wanna Be Down,” “Baby,” and “Brokenhearted,” introducing her distinctive layered vocals to a wide audience.

Her talents soon made her a television favorite as well. Brandy played the title character in the sitcom Moesha, which ran from 1996 to 2001. In 1997, she starred alongside Whitney Houston in Disney’s television production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Her second album, Never Say Never, followed in 1998 and featured “The Boy Is Mine,” her chart-topping duet with Monica. The collaboration earned both singers a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

Brandy continued exploring R&B through albums including Full Moon, Afrodisiac, Human, Two Eleven, and B7. She expanded her stage career in 2015 by making her Broadway debut as Roxie Hart in Chicago. Across music, television, film, and theater, her versatility and unmistakable vocal approach have made her an enduring favorite among R&B listeners and entertainment fans.
